Anthropic shipped Record a Skill inside Claude Cowork on 21 July 2026. It lets you screen-record a recurring task, narrate what you’re doing, and get back a Skill that Claude can run again without further prompting. Available on Pro, Max, and Team plans via the + menu of the Claude desktop app. For UK small-business owners, this is the first time a demonstration-to-automation tool of this quality is actually usable here. OpenAI’s version isn’t.

What does Claude Cowork’s Record a Skill actually do?
Record a Skill is a demonstration-to-automation tool inside Claude’s Cowork workspace. You open Cowork on the desktop app, tap Record a skill in the + menu, do the task once while talking through why you’re doing each step, and Claude turns the recording into a Skill file that lives in your library and can be triggered again on demand.
Before this, building a Claude Skill meant writing a SKILL.md file with the exact steps, the exceptions, and the reasoning. The people who know the workflow (the shop manager, the finance lead, the ops person) are almost never the people who want to sit down and write instructions detailed enough for an AI to follow. That’s the gap this closes. You do the job the way you’ve always done it. Claude does the documentation.
Why does this matter more than the last three “AI for SMBs” launches?
Most SMB automation launches in 2026 have been reskins of existing prompt libraries. This one changes the input. And the input is the reason SMBs never automate anything.
Zapier has run the workflow-library model for over a decade. It works if integrations already exist between the exact tools you use and you’re prepared to think in triggers and actions. Most small shops don’t. Their “system” is one manager, three spreadsheets, and a mental checklist. That doesn’t map to Zapier without a big translation exercise.

The viral moment
Anthropic’s launch tweet went up on 21 July and the demo videos landed within 24 hours. Miles Deutscher’s YouTube walkthrough is titled, plainly, “This NEW Claude Feature Is The Best Thing I’ve Used In 3 Years”, and the launch coverage ran through Coursiv, Stan Ventures, The Decoder, and AI Weekly the same week. That level of ops-community reaction to a productivity feature is rare. The last comparable moment I remember was ChatGPT’s Code Interpreter rollout.
Which back-office jobs should UK retailers record first?
I’ve spent 15 years running proactive-sales retail kiosks in UK and European shopping centres, currently through Opulent Beauty Ltd (Trafford Centre) and PYT Hairstyle. These are the three jobs I’ve put on the list this month.
Daily till reconciliation
Every night at close, the shop manager pulls the till Z-read, matches it against the card terminal settlement, logs any variance, and pastes the figures into a shared Google Sheet. The task takes 12 to 18 minutes and it happens 30 times a month. That’s around 8 hours across a small chain. Record it once with narration (“if the variance is over £5, flag it in column J”), and you get most of that time back without hiring an admin.
Weekly staff rota
Rotas at shopping-centre kiosks are constrained by centre opening hours, staff availability, expected footfall, and a payroll cap. Every manager has their own mental version of the rules. Those rules are exactly the kind of thing you can talk through while dragging names across a grid, which means they’re exactly the kind of thing Record a Skill was built for.
Monthly VAT prep
Anyone on the flat-rate VAT scheme knows the pre-return work: pull the ledger from Xero, categorise anything ambiguous, reconcile the till receipts, calculate the flat rate, submit through Making Tax Digital. Same steps every quarter, done differently by every bookkeeper. Recording it once means the next quarter takes 20 minutes to review instead of two hours to redo. It’s the single biggest ROI target I’ve found in the first week.
How do you record your first Claude Skill?
The Anthropic documentation is still thin. This is the sequence based on the launch post and my own testing at our Trafford Centre back office.
- Open the Claude desktop app on Windows, Mac, or Linux (Pro, Max, or Team plan)
- Start a Cowork session, tap the + menu, then Record a skill
- Grant screen and microphone permissions the first time
- Do the task exactly as you normally would, and talk through what you’re doing and why as you go
- Cover the exceptions out loud (“if the supplier invoice is over £2,000 I always double-check the PO number”)
- Hit stop. Claude reads the recording and drafts a Skill file
- Review the Skill, rename it if needed, save to your library
- Run it once on dummy data before you trust it on a live workflow
The narration is the piece most people get wrong. Stay silent, and Claude captures clicks but not reasoning. The Skill then breaks the first time it hits an edge case. Talk more than feels natural.
Where does Record a Skill break?
This is a v1 feature. Three things to watch.
Privacy documentation is missing. As of 28 July 2026, Anthropic has not published a dedicated help page for recording privacy or data retention. Don’t record anything on-screen you’d be uncomfortable sending to a US-based AI vendor. Blur or sanitise anything with customer personal data, staff bank details, or partner contracts. Anthropic’s general Cowork safety guidance still applies.
Skill quality depends on narration quality. I ran the same reconciliation twice, once silent and once talking. The silent version produced a Skill that only worked on the exact data in the recording. The narrated version generalised properly.
Rerun accuracy still varies. On the first test at our Trafford Centre back office, Claude executed a five-step categorisation Skill correctly on four steps and hallucinated one line item on the fifth. Always dry-run new Skills before you let them touch a live spreadsheet. This is the same lesson we learned running a single-dashboard consolidation for one of our Nuvaleo clients earlier this year: the automation works, but the review discipline in month one is what determines whether you trust it in month three.
What does this mean for UK SMB operations?
Small businesses have never had automation available on a “record once, run monthly” model. The bar was always prompt engineering, or a Zapier subscription, or a developer. Record a Skill drops the bar to Loom-level effort. If you can walk a new hire through a task, you can automate it.
For any UK operator running recurring back-office work, the sensible move this week is a 30-minute audit: list every job you do more than once a month, rank by minutes-per-month cost, and record the top three. That’s the same exercise we walk our own clients through in our https://nuvaleoai.co.uk/contacts/
The last time an ops tool changed what a two-person shop could plausibly run on its own was when Xero replaced Sage on the high street. This is closer to that than to any of the AI launches of 2026 so far.

11. FAQ
Which plans get Claude Cowork Record a Skill?
The feature is available on Claude Pro, Max, and Team plans via the + menu of the Claude desktop app inside a Cowork session. Free-tier users don’t get access. Team plans allow recorded Skills to be shared across an organisation, which matters if you want your shop managers to reuse each other’s work.
Can I use OpenAI’s equivalent feature in the UK?
No. OpenAI Codex Record and Replay shipped on 18 June 2026 but is Mac-only and unavailable in the UK, EEA, or Switzerland. If you’re a UK small-business owner, Anthropic’s Record a Skill is the only serious demonstration-to-automation tool you can use right now.
Is Record a Skill safe for confidential data?
Anthropic has not published dedicated privacy or retention documentation for these recordings as of 28 July 2026. Until they do, sanitise your screen before recording. Blur customer personal data, staff bank details, and contract information. Do a dry run on dummy data first, and record a real workflow only once you’re satisfied.
How is this different from Zapier?
Zapier connects apps through pre-built triggers and actions, and requires you to design the workflow logic up front. Record a Skill watches you do the work in whatever apps you already use, including ones without integrations. It’s better for messy human-mediated workflows. Zapier is still better for clean event-driven ones.
Which UK SMB workflows should I record first?
Daily till reconciliation, weekly staff rota preparation, monthly VAT return prep, supplier statement reconciliation, and month-end management reporting. Rank yours by how many minutes per month the job costs, and start with the top three.
Do I need a developer to build Skills this way?
No. That’s the point of Record a Skill. Previously you needed someone comfortable writing a SKILL.md file. Now the mechanic is: do the task while talking through it, and Claude writes the file for you. That is the single biggest change for non-technical operators.
